The University, or a recognized, Hostel. University Hostels are three in number-Lugard, Eliot and May: while there are two recognized Hostels-St. John's, maintained by the Church Missionary Society, and Morrison, maintained by the London Missionary Society- -to which a third is likely to be added by the Roman Catholic Community. As all five hostels are now full and numbers are increasing, the provision of additional accommodation is of urgent importance, unless a definite departure is to be made from the intention of the founders--a possibility which justifies some account of hostel life.

Contrary to the practice in some other institu- tions in China, the rule is absolute that each student shall have a room of his own. No marked difference is to be found between the clientèle of the University, and that of the Mission, Hostels, a number of Christian students residing in the University Hostels and the majority in the Mission Hostels being non-Christian.
